Counselling is typically an effective way to address a current issue, allowing for discussion and hopefully resolution within a limited number of sessions. Over the weeks, clients often gain a clearer understanding of their problems and identify a way forward. Therapy, on the other hand, delves deeper into more significant life challenges that can have a lasting impact on the client. It generally requires a long-term commitment, making the number of sessions more flexible.
The best option depends on the individual and the specific difficulties they are facing. In some cases, counselling may serve as a viable long-term solution, while therapy might resolve an issue in just a few sessions.
Everything shared in the counselling room is confidential—this is a key distinction between counselling or therapy and conversations with friends or family. Once you become comfortable with the structure of weekly sessions and the safe environment they offer, you’ll likely appreciate the freedom to speak openly.
It's important to note that if there are concerns about your safety or the safety of others, the law requires me to notify the appropriate authorities. In such cases, I may not be able to guarantee complete confidentiality. However, breaking confidentiality is extremely rare and will only occur after discussing it with you first.
I often hear this question from people who feel anxious about starting counselling or seeking support for visiting a therapist. This nervousness is completely normal. A crucial part of therapy is feeling safe to discuss whatever issues are important to you. Having someone else present can
make it harder to open up, so I prefer to meet with clients alone and do not allow friends or family to accompany them.
The duration of counselling varies from person to person and depends on the complexity of the issues being addressed. For some, just a couple of sessions may help clarify their problems and prepare them to move forward; for others, a more open-ended approach may be necessary.
My goal is to schedule your first appointment, known as an initial assessment, within 1-2 weeks. After that, we’ll set up a regular schedule for counselling sessions at a time that works for you and fits my availability. The start of these sessions will depend on the availability of that specific time slot.
